Who has power in your book?
In the book The Host by Stephenie Meyer almost every character has some sort of hold over atleast one other characters but none of them really have power because of how tangled up the whole story is. The person with the most power over the most people is Jeb because he made the caves in which the human rebels live while their world is taken over by aliens.
Many characters have power over others in the story. When Melanie's body is taken over by the alien Wanda she doesn't fade away, rarely does this happen that a human is strong enough to stay after their host has been obtained. In one way Melanie has power over Wanda because she uses her thoughts and memories to take back as much control of her body from Wanda as she can. Yet Wanda also has power over Melanie because she is in control of her body so Melanie doesn't really get a say in anything.
Jeb has the most power in the story because he made the caves in which the last of the human race lives so if her wants to he can just kick someone out. For example, when Kyle threatened to kill Wanda Jeb told him that it wasn't acceptable and that he would kick him out, "my house, my rules." Jeb also controls food rations, sleeping arrangements and chores, in this way he is very important and has a lot of power over the characters in the book because he controls their lives and keeps them alive. Because he's kept them all alive, all the humans in the cave (that make up most of the book characters) are indebted to Jeb and in that way he also has power over them.
In conclusion, many characters in the book The Host have power but some gain it and others come with it. Jeb has the most power because he has the most authority.

Clockwork Prince
Is this story fair?
The book Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare is not fair because during the period of time in which it takes place in, the 1800s, things were a lot more different. There was much less equality back then and many types of actions were frowned upon.
For example in the 1800s, women were not looked upon with the same equality as men were or that women are today. Women were expected to dress in very uncomfortable fashions, and were not supposed to speak their mind or give ideas. For example in the book when Charlotte the head of the Institute goes to speak with a man by the name of Mortmain he is shocked to find how abrupt and forward she is and he goes on to hint that she is rude and that to him her words are of very little importance. In the book, one of the characters, Jessamine is constantly talking about how she wants a suitor and that she shouldn't have to do any work for herself. This is unfair because work should be distributed equally.
In conclusion in the story we see how unfairly women were treated back in the day and because the main character is a young woman herself the story is really quite unfair.

RR
In the book Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare, the main character Tessa has the least power out of all the characters. The reason is because Tessa has always thought of herself as human and has recently found at that she is almost everything but. It is 1876 and Tessa has just found out she's a shape-shifter, her brother is kidnapped and that she's one of the most wanted Downworlders (creatures) in the world. There are many reasons for why Tessa has no power in the story.
One of the main reasons Tessa has no power is a very simple one. It is the late 1800s and Tessa is still considered a child. Tessa herself doesn't know if she'd rather be belittled because of her gender or if she feels comfortable going against everything her parents have ever taught her and become a short skirt wearing, beer drinking, swearing woman. Throughout the book Tessa is surrounded by people who think they can either control her because as a woman she has very little power, (old fashioned people); and different people who have outgrown their tradition and culture, a race of demon fighters called shadowhunters which include ferocious fighting woman. People who think Tessa needs to grow up and take a stand, people who push Tessa past her boundaries and end up making her feel uncomfortable.
Also in the book, Tessa has no idea what is going on around her or who anyone is because for her whole life she's been convinced that the only people to walk the earth are the normal, average speed and strength kind. Now Tessa's been pushed into an entirely new world in which she is forced to fight to survive and save her brother. Tessa doesn't where her brother is, and because he is the only family she has left she will do anything to find him. Because of this Tessa has to trust and do everything the Shadowhunters tell her to do.
In conclusion, Tessa has very little power in the book because she doesn't know anything about herself or the people she's surrounded by, and she's a woman and is not listened to by anyone. The people with power in the book are the Shadowhunters, and they prove this by taking advantage of Tess's longing to see her brother again to get control her abilities of changing shape.

Nonfiction Reading Response-Depression
It is said that nowadays the rate of depression has gotten high enough to be 1 in 8 teens . Most people use it to describe how one is feeling, but it's much more complicated than that. Depression is a gateway to things such as drugs, alcohol and even suicide attempts. Depression is very serious and needs to be looked out for.
There are many causes to depression, for example it can be passed on through blood as a disease and it may also occur on its own after perhaps a tragic event. One of the scariest things about it is that depression is a severe sadness that can lead people to do what used to be unimaginable to them. Depression comes in all sorts of forms that interfere with different things in peoples lives.
There is major depression, which can cause bad sleep and eating disorders and is usually accompanied by feelings of quilt and the inability to feel happy. There is also dysthymia which is not as severe as major depression but can affect the person for long periods of time, sometimes years. And there is the bipolar disorder which is probably the scariest one. When bipolar the person cannot control his emotions and is often switching them from completely sad to outbursts of anger and hyperness.
When people are going through periods of stress, they can begin to under or depending on the situation, over eat, this is a symptom for depression. They may also change their sleeping habits and feel as though in pain thought there is nothing physically wrong. Another symptom is when people begin to care less about their future and have frequent thoughts of suicide and death.
In conclusion depression is a very dangerous disease and needs to be looked out for in people of all ages and sizes.

Mortal Instruments book #4
Who has power in your text?
In the book City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare the people with the most power are the Clave. A group of elite shadow hunter government that make sure their people abide by their ancient laws. In the book the Clave is very strict and wrong in what they do and how they go about keeping their people in order.
In the book the Clave has one person called the Inquisitor who acts as a judge and questions people the Clave believe are lying. There have been 2 Inquisitors we've met through the book series and BOTH of the Inquisitors has been biased and followed their own rules and beliefs even if they are cruel. For example the first Inquisitor who is supposed to do her job strictly and efficiently, staying very businesslike, took the main character Jace on her own account and tortured him because she believed he was going to turn out as evil as his father Valentine who killed the Inquisitors son. The 2nd Inquisitor starved and tortured a vampire into telling the Clave he was the quilty one because he wanted the case to be closed and to have been the one to solve it.
I think this goes to show that the Clave is corrupt and falling apart, I think in the future the government will become a very big and leading issue in the book because of the evidence that the Clave does not work properly and has horrible mean workers.

Critical Question: Is this story fair? Why or why not?
Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead may seem very dumb and cheesy at first, being about vampires and half-vampires and quarter-vampires, but it's actually got some very deep and meaningful issues. These recurring themes and ideas can be very easily related to every day life such as justice, and loyalty.
After reading all 7 books in the book series I think the main theme is loyalty. The main character, Rose Hathaway has a best friend that she's protected all her life. Throughout the books Rose meets many people who question the idea that the moroi (half-vampires) really need to be protected from evil vampires (strigoi) by guardians like Rose. It is expected of every dhampir (half moroi and half human) to become a guardian and that they must sacrifice their lives to protecting moroi to keep their race going.
Rose hates being restricted and bound for life to protecting these snobby, selfish people but believes that it's for the best. This reminds me of the people in our world today and how we're all expected to be something no matter how much parents and all of society even may pretend that your life is completely in your hands; they do have impacts on us. Every day, people are compared to their siblings, friends, parents, and almost everyone else. Parents have expectations just like Rose's society does. I think the author does a great job in including this in her story.
Also, in the book there's a lot about social classes. In the moroi world there is royalty and those who are in power get guardians to protect them from strigoi. This is also an issue, because there's a lot of poverty going on in the world and the people who have no money or homes are left without protection, even if it's not protection from murderers like in the books it's still protection from disease and hunger.
In conclusion, I think that being that these two issues of expectation and poverty are the main ideas in this book that the story has a lot of unfairness and injustice going on.

Observing Surroundings
I take the train home every day. Sometimes I’ll take the bus. But that’s not important. What’s important is what can happen in the time it takes for the train to stop.
I was listening to my headphones when the train lurched to a stop and a group of teenagers with pants too short and too saggy loaded onto the train. Although the train was jam packed they managed to push everyone (or maybe it was by choice) as far away as possible. I heightened the volume of my music but even The All American Rejects couldn’t drown out the sound of the boys screaming and shouting that they were taking over the “f______ing train”. I wasn’t scared of them, but I could see that some of the younger kids in the train were. It wasn’t fair that they could just waltz in and “take over” the train.
It wasn’t right either, people getting home from work didn’t want to hear their hyena-sounding laughs or their nonstop swearing. I think the cause of ignorant kids like this is their lack of discipline and the effect is that they lose respect for others and become self-indulgent. I think what needs to happen is that schools and parents must explain to their kids that respect goes both ways. No child should be afraid of a teenager, I know when I was younger I looked up to them. That’s the way it should be.
